‘Not the billionaires’: why small-dollar donors are Democrats’ new powerhouse

Bernie Sanders’ early fundraising haul – with an average contribution of $27 – has turbo-charged the competition in a shift from the traditional way to raise money

For a significant stretch of the 2016 Democratic primary, Bernie Sanders’ political “revolution” thrived on donations that averaged $27, or “twenty-seven dollahs”, as the senator said so often during the campaign that it became a call-and-response and a joke on Saturday Night Live.
