Federal judge rules against Trump's crackdown on ‘sanctuary cities’

Judge declares that move to withhold government funds from law enforcement departments in sanctuary cities is unconstitutional

A federal judge has ruled against the Trump administration’s crackdown on “sanctuary cities” declaring that federal authorities acted unconstitutionally by withholding government grant money to local jurisdictions that offer protections to undocumented people.

District judge Edgardo Ramos said Trump’s justice department had a “lack of authority” to deny the grants used by local law enforcement. His ruling cited the tenth amendment to the US constitution, which enshrines the state’s powers outside of federal government.
