In 2016, Ansly Damus had followed U.S. protocol by presenting himself to Border Patrol and saying he feared for his life. Then he had been handcuffed and sent to a detention facility, where he’d been awaiting a resolution. When Melody Hart and Gary Benjamin heard about his case, they were stirred to action. “He has to believe that he’s come to the right place,” Hart said.
